Giant Black Holes Found at Dawn of the Universe

New look at x-ray data reveals monsters at hearts of first galaxies.
A supermassive black hole feeds on infalling matter in the early universe, as seen in an illustration.

Long gazes into deep space have turned up something huge: Signs of supermassive black holes devouring matter at the hearts of the universe's first galaxies.
Theorists had suspected that such enormous black holes existed just a billion years after the big bang, since most if not all of mature large galaxies have the matter-gobbling monsters at their centers.
Matter falling in to black holes collides at blinding speeds and bleeds energy, ultimately generating bright x-rays, so scientists turned to the space-based Chandra X-ray Observatory to provide proof for very distant—and therefore very early—black holes.
But at first even a 45-day stare into deep space—the longest and deepest yet in the x-ray spectrum—didn't provide compelling evidence.
Now, by pooling those Chandra images and looking for correlations in the data, astronomers have found the missing x-rays.
The rays took at least 13 billion years to reach Earth's telescopes, so they were emitted by perhaps the first supermassive black holes ever formed in the universe. Many of the black holes are a hundred thousand to a million times heftier than our sun.
(Related: "Huge Black Hole Found in Dwarf Galaxy.")
"These are probably the progenitors of the supermassive black holes we see now. We got them right at the very beginning," said study leader Ezequiel Treister, an astrophysicist at the University of Hawaii.
More "Baby" Black Holes Yet to Be Found?
To find the missing black holes, Treister and colleagues started looking at distant galaxies in the Hubble Space Telescope's famous Ultradeep Field, a long-term observation that captured light from galaxies about 13 billion years old.
Because of limits on the speed of light, the farther away a celestial object is, the younger it must be. Since our universe is estimated to be 13.75 billion years old, the Hubble galaxies are from the dawn of the universe.
For its record x-ray observation, Chandra stared in the same spot as Hubble, so astronomers could map Chandra's x-ray imagery on top of Hubble's visible light images.
While the x-ray observations alone didn't indicate black holes in the galaxies, the new analysis revealed noticeable signals in 197 of the galaxies, or about 30 percent.
Treister suspects all of the early galaxies may have supermassive black holes that we aren't yet able to detect.
The team mostly found energetic x-rays instead of the "soft," lower-energy x-rays black holes typically emit. Thick material blanketing the supermassive black holes might have allowed only the most powerful x-rays to escape, the team surmises.
"Large amounts of gas and dust may explain why we haven't seen anything before. They're all hidden," Treister said.
(Related: "'Hidden' Black Holes Discovered in Distant Galaxies.")
In the future, Treister would like to see an even longer x-ray stare that peers deeper into space and further back in time. Doing so may allow astronomers to find other early supermassive black holes—and solve a greater mystery about the universe.
"Galaxy formation and supermassive black holes have a strong connection, but we're not sure to what extent which causes the other. It's a chicken-and-egg problem," he said. "Looking back further in time may give us some clues."
The early black hole study will be published June 16 in the journal Nature

OBSERVERS VIEWING LUNAR ECLIPSE

Total lunar eclipse Refracted sunlight can turn the Moon a spectacular shade of red

Skywatchers in parts of Europe, Africa, Central Asia and Australia are counting on clear skies as Wednesday's lunar eclipse begins.

This is the first total lunar eclipse of 2011 and the longest in nearly 11 years, experts say.

This type of eclipse occurs when the Earth casts its shadow over the Moon.

But indirect sunlight can still illuminate the Moon turning it a dramatic shade of red.

The shadow started to fall at 1724 GMT and lifts at 2300 GMT.

"Totality" - when the lunar face is completely covered - lasts from 1922 GMT until 2102 GMT.

The 100-minute period of totality is the longest since July 2000.

Nasa's eclipse expert Fred Espenak commented: "The entire event will be seen from the eastern half of Africa, the Middle East, Central Asia and western Australia."

Observers throughout Europe will miss the early stages of the eclipse because they occur before moonrise. However, totality can be observed throughout the continent except for northern Scotland and northern Scandinavia.

In the UK, observers will be able to start viewing the eclipse at around 2100 BST (2000 GMT).

Dr Robert Massey, from the UK's Royal Astronomical Society, said the weather for viewing the event in London was "50-50" and that observers in the south-east would need a good horizon view that was not blocked by buildings.

The weather forecast looks better for viewing the event from northern parts of Britain; but the further north one is, the shorter the totality lasts.

In the Americas, the totality will be visible from eastern Brazil, Uruguay and Argentina. But none of the eclipse will be visible from North America.

Eastern Asia, eastern Australia and New Zealand will miss the last stages of the eclipse because they occur after moonset.

SPIDER-MAN: TURN OFF THE DARK MUSICAL FINALLY OPENS

Reeve Carney stars in the lead role in Spider-Man: Turn off the Dark

Troubled Broadway musical Spider-Man: Turn Off The Dark has officially opened to mostly harsh reviews.
Although critics agreed the latest reworked version was clearer, most blasted the show.
The Hollywood Reporter called the show a "bloated monster" while The New York Times branded it "a bore".
The musical had been delayed six times after being plagued with technical hitches and injuries to the cast since it first began previewing in November.

The Hollywood Reporter's David Rooney said mostly "cosmetic improvements" had been made to "this significantly overhauled but still terminally clunky reworking".
"In terms of narrative clarity and character definition, the show is sharper.
"But while the emergency surgical team has injected fanboy humor and self-conscious acknowledgements of the production's rocky gestation, they have not located a heart in this bloated monster," he wrote.
Ben Brantley from the New York Times echoed the sentiment, adding the show had gone "from jaw-dropping badness to mere mediocrity".

The Washington Post's Peter Marks admitted that while the new show was "a definite upgrade" to its previous version, "this effects-driven musical is still situated a wide canyon's distance from good".
While Entertainment Weekly blasted the score, composed by U2's Bono and The Edge "a mostly lacklustre collection of forgettable tunes that play like B-sides".
Score composers The Edge and Bono from U2 along with original director Julie Taymor attended the opening
"The lyrics are a consistently baffling, mumble-mouthed mush... they sit there, advancing neither character nor story," it said.
However, critics generally praised performances from lead actors Reeve Carney, Jennifer Damiano who plays Mary Jane and Patrick Page as the Green Goblin.
Rooney said Carney and Damiano's voices "blend well" while The Telegraph's Charles Spencer noted their "confident performances".
The Associated Press summed up its opinion by saying: "It may not be the best thing in theater, but it is far from the worst show in Broadway history."
Despite its negative publicity since first opening in preview, the $70m (£43m) show has been selling out at New York's 1,928-seat Foxwoods Theatre.
Among the celebrities on hand for opening night were former President Bill Clinton and daughter Chelsea, actors Matt Damon, Steve Martin and Liam Neeson, rapper Jay-Z, director Spike Lee, Lord Lloyd Webber and former tennis player John McEnroe

Malaysia police slammed for cattle-branding women

Malaysian lawyers, politicians and activists lambasted the police Saturday, accusing them of abusing their power in chaining up and marking the bodies of 30 foreign women detained for alleged prostitution.

Police raided a high-end nightclub in northern Penang state late Thursday and arrested 29 women from China and one from Vietnam, along with eight Malaysian men. Local media reported police officers went undercover at the club for a week before the raid.
It triggered an outcry after local newspapers carried photos of the women bound up with a long chain and marked with either a tick or an X on their chest and forehead.
"The police branded the detained women as though they are cattle," opposition lawmaker Teresa Kok said in a statement. "It is sickening that the police would employ such dehumanizing tactics as a show of power and moral superiority over their detainees."
Women's rights group Tenaganita said the detainees had been victimized and called for an investigation into the police conduct.
Another rights group, Lawyers for Liberty, said the police action was "very unusual and inhumane" as the women were merely suspects and not convicted of any crime.
Police have defended their action, saying the markings served as a way to identify the women.
Penang police chief Ayub Yaakob told the New Straits Times that the situation was chaotic, with the suspects trying to escape. He said police were forced to mark the women after some donned new clothes to try and blend in with other female patrons of the club.
He also said the women had wrecked many marriages and that police had received numerous complaints from wives of men who sought their services.
